My Artistic Journey

Christopher Evans

Expressive Artist

I began my art journey in 2017 when I was having life troubles and mental health issues and I have not stopped making art since.

I found out during the Covid lockdown whilst engaged in studying Mindfulness at Aberdeen University that I had a brain condition called Aphantasia , which I cannot visualise or imagine any senses. This information had a profound effect on me and I have used life , mindfulness and playfulness to understand myself better.

My painting is an automatic process , experimenting , being playful and not needing to visualise what you are painting or being attached to an outcome. Picasso once said “what’s the point of painting something you already know”

Painting to me is a deep connection to myself and the universe. It is where I become one with everything. Quite often I have mystical experiences whilst I paint. It is my joy and life.

As I have no recollection of visuals or most life events due to my condition my art is quite diverse as there isn’t anything to influence what comes from me in the moment.

The Covid lockdown ended my construction consultancy self employed business which I was very thankful for as I needed a push to begin something new. I spent two years studying Mindfulness and also Resilience coaching but I really wanted to do something which was mine, something I can make and began to focus more on Art and Nature.

I am exploring creating expressively with watercolour which often have mixed media such as charcoal , crayon , pencil and anything else I can find. The paintings are created automatically and mindfully with intention to express myself. Rich in symbols , mark making and colour. It is being with myself feeling everything whilst painting which generates images; the immediacy and often stubbornness of watercolour gives me that direct connect.
