My collection of Songs of my Souls were born from my obsession with finding shapes and symbols formed on tree barks in two woodlands nearby Masham in North Yorkshire in 2024 which i had photog, printed on Instax and put into a book. During February and March 2025 i found myself in my passed Dads empty home with a bed , chair and table so i spent hours abstracting in a sketchbook with a pencil. When i moved to Northumberland and finally set up my studio i began using these forms in expression.
Due to my Aphantasia my work is centred in the process of automatic and intuitive painting with watercolour. The drawn abstractions are only a guide and i let whatever colours and lines emerge in the moment. It is intense which i allow free expression that these forms take on their own spirit and emotion.
Watercolour is mutable ,unpredictable ,ephemeral , demanding , intense and whilst also ethereal my working practice allows density and use of the paint sometimes differently than it was intended.
The paintings have been painted on 100% cotton rag paper from Khadi Paper which is acid free and archival. The nature of the paper and the way it soaked the pigment allowed to create the spirit of the tree and nature as what we see isn't what is felt or seen meaning there are layers of shapes and colour behind the surface.
Even though the moment of painting is intense and completed in one sitting there is a lot of work and time in finding , abstracting and authentically painting these forms. At the moment i am taking time from seeking more images on trees to create my songs of my soul paintings there will be more painted 2027 .
The reason why i named this painting form “songs of my soul’ is that i was drawn to theses tree bark images and each step in the process felt like a deep connection of seeking something in myself contained in nature.
